Primary Mathematics Syllabus
The Primary Mathematics Syllabus aims to enable all students to:
Acquire mathematical concepts and skills for everyday use and for continuous learning in Mathematics.
Develop thinking, reasoning, communication, application and meta-cognitive skills through a mathematical approach to problem-solving.
Build confidence and foster interest in Mathematics.
Engaging Pedagogy – Activity-Based Learning (ABL)
ABL advocates the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) approach in the teaching and learning of Math. It creates learning opportunities using teaching aids like manipulatives to engage students in constructing and co-constructing conceptual understanding.
Students become Active Learners as they move through the different stages of learning, whilst strengthening their mastery of Math skills and concepts. ABL also leverages the use of technology to make good teaching better, creating a participatory, connected, and reflective Math classroom to nurture future-ready learners.

Math @ Play
Math@Play programmes are a unique feature of the Mathematics curriculum at Northshore Primary and aim to foster the joy of learning. These programmes gamify Math skills and concepts into games-based activities to stimulate interest and build confidence. Students are provided with opportunities to contextualise their learning in “real-world” (game) settings.
Project H.E.L.M. (Home-School Partnership): Project Help our Explorers Learn Math involves Primary 1 and 2 students demonstrating their creativity by creating and playing games through home-school collaboration.
Let's Play Math! & Math Day Out!: Customised activities and trails where students explore, compete, and experience the joy of discovery of Mathematics while seeking out strategies to win and reinforcing their skills.
Enhanced Learning Support for Mathematics (Enhanced LSM)
This programme is designed to provide early intervention to students who need additional support in acquiring basic numeracy skills from Primary 1 to 4. Supported by trained teachers, the goals of Enhanced LSM are to:
Equip students with mathematical knowledge, skills, and dispositions so that they can learn mathematics with their peers.
Help students achieve an age-appropriate mathematical age.
Students engaging in a hands-on activity as part of the Project H.E.L.M. initiative to reinforce mathematical concepts at home.
Let’s Play Math! Students engaging in interactive recess games, where exploring mathematical concepts becomes an exciting discovery.
Math Day Out! Students participating in an interactive learning trail, working together to solve challenges and discover Mathematics in the world around them.
Constructing and Flying Mathematical Kites - Students applying geometric knowledge and measurements to design and fly their own kites, making Math come alive.
Math UPS2 Approach to Problem Solving
Problem solving is an essential component in the teaching and learning of Mathematics. Students will be encouraged to use varied strategies to solve problems, to seek alternative solutions to problems and to create, formulate or extend problems. Students will learn different heuristics skills for problem solving, with an emphasis in model drawing.
Math UPS2 is adapted from George Polya’s Four Steps Problem-Solving Approach.
